Corneal Scarring and Cataract Surgery
Corneal scarring makes cataract surgery more challenging because is physically obscures the surgeon’s view of the cataract.
New techniques, such as staining the lens capsule with special dyes, such as Trypan Blue, have revolutionized cataract surgery in these complex cases and significantly decreased the risk. Also femtosecond laser (ie, LENSX) also may help in the creation in the capsulorhexis in certain cases where the corneal scarring is minimal or in a small part of the cornea.
If the scarring is extensive such as in the case below, sometimes a corneal transplant has to be performed at the time of cataract surgery.
