Eyelid Surgery that can damage Meibomian Glands and Cause Dry Eye

We have seen many patients develop dry eye after eyelids surgery or have a worsening in symptoms.
The technique below, the double gold procedure, can cause new dry eye as well.
I discussed this with my sister, Dr. Andrea Lora Kossler, who is the head of the oculoplastics department at Stanford, who said:
I don’t do this technique but it’s the most common way to create a double lid crease in Korea
They go through tarsal plate so some Meibomian Glanfs may be damaged.

With any eyelid procedure, ask if the surgeon will be going through the tarsal plate. In all Chalazion surgeries, which is the most common eyelid surgery in the world, we always destroy at least one meibomian gland to remove the Chalazion (ie the scarred, damaged gland).
