The first time I saw a “Couched Cataract” was at Harvard. It was an elderly patient from China who worked as a peasant. His children had done very well from all his sacrifice at home and were finally able to bring him to the US.
His retina was already scarring around his cataract and he was slowly becoming blind.
The above video is an excellent review on the history of cataract surgery.
