Innovation in Dry Eye Care; #14 on my Treatment “Step Ladder”: BostonSight PROSE Treatment

About BostonSight® PROSE Treatment:

Innovation in Dry Eye Care: #14 on the

Dry Eye Treatment “Step Ladder”:

A former colleague, Dr. Debbie Jacobs has been doing great work with the BostonSight® PROSE for many years.

This device does work for many patients and should be tried if a patient is in continuous agony and nothing else has helped. This device has been used for years for thousands of patients with conditions such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS)ocular chronic graft versus host disease (GVHD), severe dry eye syndromeSjogren’s syndromekeratoconus, pellucid marginal
degeneration, ocular trauma, post- LASIK, or post- transplant dry eye or poor vision.BostonSight®PROSE can be the ideal, and sometimes only, treatment capable of restoring vision and dramatically reducing symptoms such as eye pain, blurry vision and light sensitivity. The issue for many patients are the following:
1. Finding a provider that can fit the PROSE Lens. The closest place to my office is Johns Hopkins about 1 hour away.
2. The cost: The website says: “Almost 80% of patients treated with PROSE at BFS are covered by insurance and/or financial assistance.” The reality is that most patients have to pay for flights, accommodations, cost for repeat  visits which can increase total costs. Many patients have noted on line that their PROSE was not covered by insurance. A scleral lens (not a PROSE) cost about $1000 and a PROSE costs between $2000-$5000 depending on many factors.

Prosthetic device on finger
BostonSight® PROSE (prosthetic replacement of the ocular surface ecosystem) is a treatment pioneered by Boston Foundation for Sight that restores visual function, supports healing, reduces symptoms and improves quality of life for patients suffering with complex corneal disease. BostonSight PROSE treatment uses FDA approved (1994) custom designed and fabricated prosthetic devices to replace or support impaired ocular surface system functions. BostonSight PROSE treatment is available at top-ranked academic medical centers and clinics across the U.S.
During treatment doctors customize prosthetic devices for each patient’s condition and unique eye shape. Prosthetic devices are manufactured on site at our state of the art Manufacturing Lab. BostonSight PROSE devices have been approved by the FDA since 1994 for the treatment of ocular surface disease and ectasia.
Goals
The goals of BostonSight PROSE treatment are to:
  • Reduce symptoms and support healing by restoring a healthy ocular surface environment
  • Improve blurry vision by masking surface corneal irregularities and transmitting a sharp image to the back of the eye
  • Prevent damage by protecting the cornea against the environment and eyelids
PROSE is available at top-ranked academic medical centers and clinics around the world through our BostonSight Network. Treatment is covered by many major insurance carriers and financial assistance is available for those who qualify.
